The Challenge
As a cherished home on the National Historic Registry, this stunning landmark came with its fair share of design constraints. The exterior had to stay true to its original form, and when it came to remodeling the screen porch, even the window sizes were off-limits for change. But challenges are our thing. So we rolled up our sleeves, worked closely with the client and found creative ways to honor the home’s history while bringing their vision to life.
Our Solution
We began work on the main floor, using the screen porch as a solid foundation to build upon. Since we couldn’t alter the window sizes, we replaced the screens with glass to invite more light in, enhancing the space’s charm and making this living space usable year round. Inside, we worked our magic, adding stucco walls to mirror the home’s exterior, and incorporating reclaimed flooring from another part of the house to help the room fit right in with a sense of continuity and history. The result? A cozy, heated breakfast sunroom — perfect for soaking up the morning light.
Upstairs, we turned the once-screened sleeping porch into a bright and cheerful kids’ bathroom, complete with convenient Jack and Jill entries that make family life a lot easier. Every detail was thoughtfully crafted to bring both beauty and practicality to this historic home.
We've used Associated Housewrights for several projects, and could not be more pleased with their conscientiousness, craftsmanship and professionalism. If there's an aspect that needs to be modified, even after the project has begun, they'll work with you until you're pleased, always offering suggestions for improvement. Their finished work consistently elicits extremely positive (and unsolicited) comments from visitors. We won't hesitate to use them again.”
